Vignettes

I'm sharing short stories of mine that have been created as old writing exercises — here's an explainer behind what they are.

Vignettes
A lone figure sitting in a dark library, at a desk writing in fierce concentration.

I very, very sporadically have published some short stories online.

I call them "vignettes" and have to credit a good friend of mine, Dang, for giving me the initial inspiration almost a decade ago. They shared some of their own stuff on social media and I thought it was a lovely way to work on something low-stakes unrelated to an existing creative project of mine — particularly if I was feeling writer's block already.

Mostly, I've shared these on Facebook and Tumblr, but now that I have recreated my own space here I'm going to start slowly publishing them once again.

The point of the writing exercise is very simple: I trawl around online for an image that resonates and when I find one, I write a short story that's been inspired by it.

(Mostly; the one example that ran counter to this is the one I'm going to share first — even though it is not chronological in writing or publishing date. This one was a dream I had that was so vivid in nature that I wrote the story originally and then found an image after the fact. But, most of the time, it was the other way around. This first one is also, by far, the very longest.)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy them. I'll add to this category over time, but please leave a comment with your thoughts and let me know if any of them resonate with you the same way.
